Overview of this Project
Bhūmi is a conceptual editorial publication focused on exploring culture, material, and craft through the lens of Gujarat. The project involved developing a cohesive magazine system, including masthead design, typography, grid structures, color palette, and imagery. By combining storytelling with structured editorial design, the publication highlights the relationship between people and the land while maintaining a consistent and visually engaging reading experience.
The Challenge
The main challenge was designing an editorial system that balances cultural storytelling with clarity and readability. The publication needed to feel visually rich and expressive without overwhelming the reader or disrupting the flow of content. Another challenge was creating a masthead and typographic system that feels distinctive and rooted in cultural context while remaining clean, modern, and adaptable across multiple pages and layouts.
The Solution
The solution was a structured editorial system built on strong typography, grid consistency, and a cohesive visual language. The masthead was refined through iterations to improve readability and balance, while type pairings were selected to contrast bold titles with readable body text. A 12-column grid system ensured flexibility and alignment across layouts, supported by a color palette inspired by natural and cultural elements. Graphic elements and imagery were carefully integrated to enhance storytelling while maintaining visual rhythm and consistency.
The Result
The final publication successfully combines editorial structure with cultural storytelling, creating a clear and cohesive reading experience. bhūmi demonstrates strong use of hierarchy, typography, and grid systems while maintaining a distinctive visual identity. This project strengthened my skills in editorial design, system thinking, and translating cultural narratives into structured visual formats, highlighting my ability to balance expressive content with clarity and consistency.
